Egg Tempura

Before the invention of oil paint in the EuropeanRenaissance, artists created paintings with powdered, colored pigments mixed with egg yolk as bindingagent. We call this egg tempera paint. The EthiopianDiptych with Mary and Her Son, and Apostles, andSaints George and Theodorewas painted with thistype of tempera paint. Medieval artists ground stonesand minerals into powder to create different colors. In this activity you’ll make egg tempera paint in muchthe same way that medieval artists did, using pow-dered pigments instead of grinding your own minerals.
