Education, featured Basic Introduction to Trauma Trauma is the impact on a person of a distressing or disturbing experience, which can include both emotional and physical symptoms that affect a person’s day to day life in different ways. This course is an introduction to basic trauma. It introduces participants to the basics of trauma in human beings, including its causes, types and symptoms, including a study of trauma from war. By the end of the course, participants will have basic knowledge of the causes and consequences of trauma in humans. This course is useful for anyone who has experienced trauma, who has family or friends who have experienced trauma, or who works with individuals who have experienced trauma. Education Basic Trauma Training - Group Applications Trauma is the impact on a person of a distressing or disturbing experience, which can include both emotional and physical symptoms that affect a person’s day to day life in different ways. This course is an introduction to basic trauma, and the use of group methods, as a treatment option. It consists of five modules, and begins by introducing students to the basics of trauma in human beings including its causes, types and symptoms. Students are then oriented to group counselling as a method for supporting those who experience trauma before learning and practicing group facilitation skills themselves. This is complemented with an introduction to trauma management strategies and overview of key principles needed for effective group facilitation. By the end of the course, participants will have basic knowledge of the causes and consequences of trauma in humans, and will learn how facilitated groups support individuals with trauma to move past their trauma. This course is useful for anyone who works with individuals who have experienced trauma, want a deeper understanding of trauma, and want to gain exposure to a practical and accessible group method of mitigating the impacts of trauma. Education, featured Be Safe Online This course is for adults who use devices and spend time online. It is for anyone who wants to learn about online safety issues and essential safety precautions, and learn about tools and strategies to keep themselves safe. Women and girls are especially vulnerable online; therefore, we have included sections focused on common issues they face. For teachers, this course will give you the necessary foundation to support your students as they also learn about being safe online. AFSO Calculus This course presents the basic principles of Calculus by examining functions and their derivatives and integrals with a special emphasis placed on the utilitarian nature of the subject material. Since the derivative measures the instantaneous rate of change of a function and the definite integral measures the total accumulation of a function over an interval, these two ideas form the basis for nearly all mathematical formulas in science, engineering, economics, and other fields. This course also provides instruction on how to model situations in order to solve problems. Applications include graphing, and maximizing and minimizing functions. AFSO Caring in Reading and Writing Goal: We will learn about caring as a value, practice and framework and the many ways people express care. AFSO Chemistry 1 - Part 2 This Introductory Chemistry course is a continuation course which follows AFSO Chemistry 1 - Part 1 (from Summer '23 or Fall '23). Part 2 will continue with molecules & compounds, chemical bonding (including VSEPR and hybrid orbitals), chemical reactions and chemical quantities (stoichiometry), and solution stoichiometry. Education Connected Learning Essentials This course introduces teaching staff to the concept and key practices of Connected Learning. It has been developed in haste and with acknowledgement of the challenges currently facing teaching staff. Education Creating Gender Responsive Learning Environments This course will focus on ground realities around gender through an educational lens. You will spend a significant amount of time understanding gender inequity and the specific challenges that girl students face. In Module A, you will learn about conducting gender surveys and collecting data. In Module B, you will reflect on the current context and learn about preparing support plans for students at-risk of dropping out. Finally, since this is not only about getting re-enrolling students back in school but also keeping them there in the long run, in Module C, you will look at how you can work towards building a gender responsive school - one that recognizes the needs of girl students and creates a safe and nurturing space for them. AFSO English and Critical Thinking This seminar is designed for students, especially those in the social sciences, who want to improve their writing. Classes will focus on how to write an argumentative or persuasive essay, as contrasted with a “narrative essay.” Our main focus will be on “academic” or professional writing, in which the author poses a significant question and sets out to answer it, presenting evidence and drawing on relevant literature on the issue. We will also examine persuasive writing directed to a larger, non-professional audience, including those addressed to citizens generally. Students will write four or five essays during the course.
